Is your scale still accurate? Do weight values change without anything being added? From inconsistent readings to environmental wear, here are five signs your scale may need calibration or service.
1. Inconsistent Weights
Are you getting different readings for the same product?
That is a red flag. Inconsistent results may signal issues with load cells, internal circuitry, mechanical binding, or debris buildup. If your readings do not match, it is time to have a technician inspect and recalibrate your scale.
2. Scale Does Not Return to Zero
Is your scale showing weight even after it is empty?
If your scale does not return to zero after removing the load, even by 0.1 or 0.2 kg, the zero point may have drifted. This is one of the most common signs that calibration is needed.
3. Readings Drift Over Time
Do weight values increase or decrease without additional weight being added?
This is called drift. Temperature fluctuations, humidity, vibrations, or electrical interference can all be contributing factors. These often indicate the need for calibration.
4. Visible Wear or Environmental Exposure
Has your scale been exposed to moisture, dust, or harsh chemicals?
Exposure to tough conditions such as moisture, dust, or chemical spillage can allow contaminants to enter open areas of the keypad or housing. This may cause unresponsive buttons or compromised electronics. In some cases, operators may use a knife or pointed tool to trigger buttons. This can worsen wear, damage contact points, and lead to internal issues.
5. It Has Been Over Six Months
When was your last professional calibration?
If it has been more than six months, your scale may no longer be performing within acceptable tolerances. Routine calibration, especially in high-use environments, helps maintain measurement accuracy and prevents costly errors.
