What does "Legal for Trade" mean, and why do I need it?
In Canada, Legal for Trade scales are certified devices, certified to ensure compliance with Measurement Canada regulations and the Weights and Measures Act.
If you are buying or selling products based on weight, then these products should be weighed on a Legal for Trade certified weighing device.
A Measurement Canada certified scale ensures that the scale measures accurately, which is important for fair trade and consumer protection.
In order to satisfy the requirements, you should ensure that your devices:
- Have been approved, inspected, and certified before you use them. If your device does not already have a valid inspection sticker or certificate, you can obtain one by having the device inspected by Measurement Canada staff or by an Authorized Service Provider. Interweigh Systems Inc is considered as an Authorised Service Provider.
- Are appropriate for their intended uses. Many scales are designed with different features and capacities for measuring certain kinds of commodities, such as precious metals scales for weighing gold and silver, dispensers for measuring propane, and vehicle scales for weighing trucks and trains;
- Are properly installed and protected from environmental interferences;
- Are used in a manner that ensures accurate measurement; and
- Clearly indicate the weight or measure.
Why is accuracy important?
- Fair trade: Accurate measurements ensure that trade is fair and competitive.
- Consumer protection: Accurate measurements protect consumers from being overcharged or undercharged.
A Legal for Trade scale must not only be certified, but owners and users remain legally responsible for the ongoing accuracy of their weighing and measuring devices
